Bloc Party find themselves in contemplative mode – and it’s a slow-burning treat

Off the back of ‘Octopus’ comes ‘Day Four’- the second single from Bloc Party’s upcoming album ‘Four’. In contrast to ‘Octopus’s spiky new wave, ‘Day Four’ finds Kele in soulful form, leading us to believe that ‘Four’ may lie between ‘Intimacy’ and ‘A Weekend In The City’. Produced by Alex Newport (The Mars Volta/Death Cab for Cutie), ‘Day Four’ is a slow-burner, with a bassline half-reminiscent of The Police’s ‘I’ll Be Watching You’.

Okereke’s vocals are reflective, and mournful, noting the atmosphere around him ‘it’s in the trees, it’s in the leaves’, and encouraging the listener to seek solace in their surroundings, singing “If you are alone, stay that way- the city’s here for you”. The solace doesn’t last for long though, there’s a sense of anxious action – he’s searching for something to occupy his thoughts. Languid strings accompany a spidery middle eight, with ghostly vocals building up a sense of unease. It’s a track to invest some time in. Press repeat, and it’ll creep up on you like a cobweb.

“Let me tell you about the time I almost made Jay Reatard kick my ass. This was in 2000, back in Memphis. The Glands were playing a show at a small club ominously named the Last Place on Earth, and Reatard’s band, the Final Solutions, had been added as a last-minute opener. It was not a good…”

Pitchfork: Album Reviews: White Lung: Sorry

“If you’re familiar with the Vancouver four-piece White Lung, it’s fair to assume you’re a punk in the traditional sense. And that’s because over the past six years White Lung have functioned in a distinctly underground and subversive mode. They’ve trekked Canada and the States on DIY tours…”

Pitchfork: Album Reviews: Sasha Go Hard: Do You Know Who I Am?

“Values in hip-hop are shifting. Gone are the days when credibility was tethered to sheer lyricism, steady touring, self-promoted mixtapes, hard-won co-signs, major-label affiliations, or background. Masculinity and heterosexuality are no longer a given. Instead, in 2012 we have artists buoyed by…”

“The first time Bob Mould heard My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, he was touring the UK as a solo act in late 1991. He’d walked out on a Virgin contract that had paid for two very good solo albums, and booted a management team that had, unbeknownst to him, traded his publishing rights for tour…”
