Off the back of ‘Octopus’ comes ‘Day Four’- the second single from Bloc Party’s upcoming album ‘Four’. In contrast to ‘Octopus’s spiky new wave, ‘Day Four’ finds Kele in soulful form, leading us to believe that ‘Four’ may lie between ‘Intimacy’ and ‘A Weekend In The City’. Produced by Alex Newport (The Mars Volta/Death Cab for Cutie), ‘Day Four’ is a slow-burner, with a bassline half-reminiscent of The Police’s ‘I’ll Be Watching You’.
Okereke’s vocals are reflective, and mournful, noting the atmosphere around him ‘it’s in the trees, it’s in the leaves’, and encouraging the listener to seek solace in their surroundings, singing “If you are alone, stay that way- the city’s here for you”. The solace doesn’t last for long though, there’s a sense of anxious action – he’s searching for something to occupy his thoughts. Languid strings accompany a spidery middle eight, with ghostly vocals building up a sense of unease. It’s a track to invest some time in. Press repeat, and it’ll creep up on you like a cobweb.
